Russian Goalie Vladislav Tretiak stands dejected after the USA ice hockey team completed the famous 'Miracle on Ice' - 22nd February 1980.
The Soviet Union team has dominated world ice hockey since the mid 1950s, winning every world and Olympic championship during that period. Coming into the 1980 winter games at Lake Placid, the USA team consisted of collegiate and amateur players, and were not tipped to beat the mighty Soviets.
After going down 3 - 2 in the second period, the USA fought back to win 4 - 3 with their winning goal being scored in the dying seconds of the game. Sportscaster Al Michaels delivered his now famous commentary with only ten seconds left:
"11 seconds, you've got 10 seconds, the countdown going on right now! Morrow, up to Silk. Five seconds left in the game. Do you believe in miracles?! YES!!!"
